New Starburst review. Psycho-Pass is an anime thriller set in a dystopian sci-fi world in the vein of Philip K Dick, George Orwell or William Gibson, and was for once the entire series rather than just the first half. It was also pretty damn good.
The Japan of the future has become a self-sustaining isolationist nation where order is maintained by the Sibyl System, a centralised AI network of instant personality assessment and behaviour analysis. Constantly monitoring the psychological stability of the country’s citizens, anyone whose analysed mental state (the titular psycho-pass) even briefly fluctuates outwith rigidly defined parameters is immediately branded a latent criminal (someone deemed in possession of the mindset to one day commit a crime) and pre-emptively incarcerated in order to preserve stability.
